ABOUT ME

Hi! I’m Katie. I am a bilingual educator eager to cultivate student development of language, rhetoric, and culture.

My Background

Greetings! My name is Katie Pals. I am from the diverse city of Miami, Florida where I developed a strong taste for the Spanish language, salsa dancing and arroz con frijoles at a young age. I am continually seeking new language immersive opportunities. Currently, I live in Madrid Spain. I teach at I.E.S. Marques de Santillana in Colmenar Viejo right outside central Madrid.

I am a native English speaker with C2 level Spanish proficiency. I have a background in English writing instruction, bilingual education, and language acquisition. My experience includes work with students from the preschool to university level, and I am trained as a certified world languages teacher.  In both my undergraduate and graduate studies I have learned successful methods for implementing International Baccalaureate program standards in English language and literature in order to help students thrive academically, ethically, and emotionally as they develop their critical thinking skills in a global society.

In my spare time I like to run, play volleyball, paddle board, and befriend people and animals.

My Goals

My objectives for this program are to help students advance in their English language goals. Through my teaching, I hope that my students continue to develop an interest in cross-cultural engagement. My goal is to create a learning environment that enables students to develop their language skills while incorporating multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement for second language (L2) learners.

My own goals are to immerse myself in the Spanish language and culture. So far, I have been able to work toward this goal by collaborating with my co-workers to learn more about their experiences here in Spain. We often compare the educational methodologies both here in Spain and in the USA as we find ways to best meet the needs of our students. My goal is to grow as a teacher in my language practices, but also in my classroom management and leadership skills.
